Queensland - Very wet -The last two days have seen record rainfall -100 year storm and flooding
/Queensland to the north of Coolangatta has had record rainfall and extensive flooding of over 150mm per day covering Monday and Tuesday of this week.
We haven’t been affected by the weather apart from Ken getting very wet at Coolangatta Tweed Golf club on Monday afternoon.
We have been able to do most things including shopping and walking upon the beach between the heavy showers. The Rainfall has been consistent throughout Monday afternoon and evening. But on Tuesday diminished to only irregular showers.
So we went shopping at Coles at Tweed Heads to complete a larger shop. Jeanette feels more comfortable at Coles, whereas we use the Woolworths some 300 metres from our resort for the day to day shopping.
Ken walked along the boardwalk to Kirra on Monday morning , Jeanette was not interested in such as she was completing her knitting of a hat.
Monday afternoon Ken hit off at 12.18pm at Coolangatta Tweed and played with two chaps from Bowrell in the southern NSW Tablelands about 90 minutes-120 minutes from Sydney. They were good golfers with one off 6 and the other off 19. They walked and Ken drove a motorised cart. The course was damp on commencement but in excellent condition, we played good golf and because so many had cancelled in anticipation of the rain, it meant we could get through rather quickly.
Ken played well and had 86 off the stick, clearly his best score for several months. But the highlight was 3 holes on the front nine prior to the heavy rain arriving. On a Par 5 he had a par with 3 beautiful shots to the green and then sunk a short putt after a very good lag. On the next hole he had a par on the par three.
Then on a difficult par 4 he drove well to about 180 metres, then hit a 5 metal to the green and holed a 25 foot putt for a brilliant 3 on what was a very tough par 4. Everyone in our group and the group behind all cheered loudly. I rarely get this chance so it was a “bring back” hole that makes you want to play and come back.
So a very good afternoon, but the rain arrived at about 1.30pm and it bucketed down until almost 3.00pm. And we progressed through the next 7 holes in a tough wet environment, but the course was deteriorating quickly with a lot of surface water.
As these photos show Ken had 4 holes where he had chipped or pitched to less than 2 feet. Simply amazing.
The rain was extremely heavy through 12 -15 holes there partially stopped and we then played through intermittent showers to complete the course in some 3 hours and 40 minutes. The other chaps were wet through but we had a very enjoyable if wet afternoon.
Ken drove back to Coolangatta through a very heavy storm. Jeanette returned from the Surf Life Saving club and also commented how wet it had been.
Then we had cheese and biscuits and a drink and a lorikeet came to sit on the balcony fence. Jeanette put out some wetbix, and they came and tried them.
Then dinner in-house with a glass of a good red wine.. A very good day.
Both slept well and awoke to a wet and drab Tuesday morning with heavy rain again predicted. After breakfast Ken walked and whilst a couple of light showers it was enjoyable and he walked through to Kirra. When we were last here the Kirra SLSC was under a major rebuild and renovation. This has now been finalised and is an impressive renovation with a restaurant overlooking the surf beach.
Ken returned after about 90 minutes and joined Jeanette and we had an enjoyable Cappuccino at Coolangatta Surf Club. We overlooked the beach, watched the booming surf coming though and the many surf riders.
The Gold Coast Surf event continues at Rainbow Bay and is down to the quarter finals and there remain thousands of supporters watching and viewing.
We spend the night in house deciding that it was pointless going out for dinner with the challenging wet weather.
There is continuing forecasts for heavy rainfall over the next 4 days.
On Wednesday morning Ken is scheduled to again play golf at Coolangatta Tweed Heads. We will see.
However, Wednesday arrived and the weather whilst drab is dry following heavy rainfall overnight. Ken is updating his Blog and attaching some photos.
He will go to Golf at about 12.15pm. We are doing the washing , using the dishwasher and catching up .
We have had an enjoyable first 5 days here in Coolangattaqn . The days and the time pass quickly. Tonight it is Schnitzel night at the Surf club. We will enjoy that. Always a good feed. Parking may be an issue.
I haven’t commented but our little vehicle ( Suzuki) is comfortable and fits all our gear. It has 3,824 km on the clock so is almost new. Very pleased with it to date.
The beautiful Kirra Surf Beach. Simply superb on a wet afternoon.
