Helicopter Experience from Namib Desert to the Coast- An unbelievable Experience
We had a variety of options as to excursions and excursions from the Desert Lodge to other parts of the Desert including Sossusvlei , but most of these involved either extensive walking and hiking through kilometres of sand, or aggressive bike and quad riding through sand etc.
However, there were 2 option of interest:
-the first was an expensive balloon flight over the Desert
-the second was a range of Helicopter flights over the Desert.
We chose the option of updating our flight (which was included in our Namib package) to a longer 90 minute flight from the Helipad at the Sossusvlei Desert lodge for the 100km flights over the Desert to the Coast, where there are sand dunes of 450-500 feet height. These protrude from the Ocean and create a plateau of Sand dunes right back to the Camp of some 100 kilometres.
As you may expect there was a general nervousness and uncertainty as to this flight.
This was compounded, when upon arrival at the Helipad, the Helicopter will not start, they have a battery problem and need to go back to the workshop, get batteries to make a jump start. This is somewhat unnerving, but 20 minutes later it is completed, we are on our way and excited.
The next almost two hours provides breathtaking scenery and a once in a life time experience as take in the mile upon mile of sand dunes of a range of colours from the “iron” red through to the and yellows of the different rock and sedimentary deposits of thousands/ millions of years. It is indescribable as we traverse to the coast, suddenly cross the coast, fly over then along the coastline then see thousands of seals and cannot see the penguins.
My Words don’t do it justice.
Then back to an area of petrified sand dunes , where they land the helicopter and we have “sundowners” and take in another magical sunset.
This has been an epic experience, yes expensive, but beyond my words to describe this phenomenon of mature.
The photos add some reality.
We were very glad that we had chosen this excursion!!!
