Oceania Sirena Sea Days and Visit to Nuuk , Capital of Greenland.
We sailed for almost 2 full days to eventually cover 1190 Miles sailing from Isafjordur Iceland to Nuuk , Greenland with a significant amendment to our itinerary due to safety concerns originally from the large ice floes with ice coming off the shrinking major glaciers in both Iceland and Greenland. It meant we spent an additional day visiting the Nuuk Fjord and there didn’t visit QaQortoq or Price Kristina Fjord.
We all understood. We also spent a changed schedule in Paamiut where we anchored and then visited the freight terminal and were then given a guided tour.
The sea days are full of activities and we enjoyed to full length educational lecture as to Iceland and then the Greenland history.
Nuuk is the Capital of Greenland and played a significant role in our trip through Greenland after the changes to our itinerary as a consequence of the ice floes from the retreating glaciers as a result of Climate Change. It is a vibrant city unlike anything we have seen elsewhere, because of the vast Natural influence and the climate changes. It is a city of vitality surrounded by immense nature enclaves filled with vibrant Greenlanders leading a mix of lifestyles from old traditions to vital new twists. home to a variety of gourmet restaurants, fashion boutiques and diverse international influencers. A highlight was the Katauskas Cultural Centre which is inspired by the Northern Lights. Nuuk is very much the ho,e of modern Greenland.
We spent time in the Old Centre which reflects the history and origins . Nuuk literally means “the headland” in Greenland is. The city lies at the headland of a large peninsula at the mount of the vast fjord system called “Nuuk Kangerlua” which means Nuuk Fyjord. We visited the National Museum, took in old sailing ships, whalers and mummies . We were shown some detail of urban arctic living and the move toward independence. we walked the pedestrian walkways of the city. We enjoyed our time here.
