Well, we were hoping that the rain bomb that has devastated wide areas of Central and southern Queensland would move east and off shore.
Unfortunately that is not the case with major flooding in areas to the North of the Gold Coast with the weather moving southward and Coolangatta will be impacted from Friday though to Sunday with continuing drizzle and heavier rainfall on Saturday. Friday was a mixed day dry in the morning bit overcast and Ken went for about a 2 hour walk around to Rainbow Bay to see the workmen pulling down the scaffolding from the Gold Coast Surf event which concluded on Wednesday. The whole area remains secure and locked down as there is a danger from the rainfall and very slippery conditions.
It was amazing to see the outflow from Tweed River and the range of coloured foam, then the rough seas of 3-4 metres and the beaches remain closed.
Just a stark reminder of the issues of climate Change. In the Lokyear Valley on the Sunshine Coast hinterland there has been flooding of 8-10 feet with rivers and creeks breaking their banks. Many houses again flooded following the devastation of 2-3 months ago.
Here on the Gold Coast we have experienced steady but less damaging rainfall and storms. The beaches appear to have survived the extremely rough seas without the major erosion of the last couple of years.
Ken was scheduled to play golf on Friday but cancelled as the course was so wet on the Thursday.
We have filled our time in well with shopping today. We had dinner in this evening with beautiful chicken fillets and vegetables then ice cream. Also continued to drink a beautiful bottle of wine from the South Australian region of McLaren Vale with a 2018 Shiraz. Something special!!
Jeanette visited the surf Club whilst Ken finalised some shopping and he returned to our condo and put the groceries away and watched Woman’s Golf on Kayo. He was planning to undertake an afternoon walk to Kirra , but by this stage the rain had started and was setting in.
Jeanette returned at approximately 3.45pm and Ken got biscuits and cheese asnd pate etc together with a drink. All very pleasant.
Tonight we intend to watch the football ( Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood) played at Marble Stadium in Melbourne. Unfortunately, a poor game and Western Bulldogs won easily by eighth goals.
We awoke to a very wet Saturday morning, intending to Shop and wa;k, but those plans have changed.
But still great to be away in mild to warm weather in shorts etc.
The Waves around Snapper rocks at Rainbow Bay are almost totally covered by Surf and foam from the Teed River. Waves are 3-4.5 metres and it is deemed dangerous and Beaches are closed.
This is a small bay at Ssnapper rocks at Rainbow Bay with the foam from the Tweed River outflow blanketing the beach area. There has been some minor erosion here. The Waves are 3-4.5 metres high and the beach is closed - too dangerous and no lifeguards about.
The building above is our Beachcomber International Resort. We have a 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom with lounge and kitchen on 8th floor (8B) and it is very comfortable.
We have stayed here or the nearby Beach House(on several occasions), which are both Classic Holiday timeshare apartment blocks. Comfortable and well maintained in excellent location.
The weather remains a nuisance, but nothing we can do about it.
