Our Day in Port Lincoln.
After the swells and rough seas of yesterday morning, our arrival in Port Lincoln was quiet, assured, and without any controversy. The ship arrives on schedule at 7.00 am. Then clearance was issued at 7.20 am and the morning tours departed from the Princess Theatre at 8.30 am.
It is a near-perfect day with a cloudless blue sky and little or no wind.
We had a sleep-in, then a leisurely breakfast in the 14th-floor buffet ( Lido) then a leisurely morning around the ship.
Our tour is an early afternoon with a 12.00 pm meeting time on the wharf (in the shade). This is significantly easier than yesterday with the tender arrangements, whereas here it is a short walk from the ship, meet the guides and board a bus which was located on the major wharf and only 50 meters from the ship. We visited Port Lincoln in approximately mid-1987 and it was wild weather. Today is perfectly calm.
You are immediately struck by the size of the grain silos. This is the largest grain export port throughout southern Australia. It is also the largest export port for seafood. We are told that the Eyre Peninsula and the gulf area supply 66% of Australia’s seafood exports predominantly to Asia.
We depart with a drive past the grain silos and the Tuna fishing boats and drive down the main street before swinging left to travel to several small beaches and enjoy time walking and then taking photos.
Then we travel back toward the only working woolshed Museum in southern Australia and we then enjoy an afternoon of scones, jam, and cream and a lecture from the owner who explains the history of the Woolshed and its transition and conversion into a museum. It is now used for many weddings, small conferences, and many exhibitions.
We then travel a further 25 minutes to Winter Hill the highest point around Port Lincoln for a wonderful scenic view of the ship in the Berth and the surrounding township. The outlook provides a terrific overview. We are surprised as to how dry the local area and surrounds are given the heavy rainfall the area experienced in November 2022.
We conclude with a tour back through the town and with a detailed description of the successful people from Port Lincoln.
